Hush Mavourneen
E-word,
One of the things that I love most about being a father is singing to my son before he goes to sleep at night. I carry him around, and usually sing songs like Hush little baby, and Stay Awake. I've thrown in '40' by U2, and 'Orphan Girl' by Gillian Welch. I realize that it's probably okay to sing songs with very sad themes ('Asleep' by the Smiths is another I sing occasionally), and it seems that many sad songs have very sleepy tunes to go with them. The latest that I want to learn and sing to my boy is the song 'Kitty', as sung by the Pogues.
Here are the lyrics.
Oh kitty, my darling, remember
That the doom will be mine if I stay
’tis far better to part, though it’s hard to
Than to rot in their prison away
’tis far better to part, though it’s hard to
Than to rot in their prison away
So softly he kissed her pale lips
’twas the same story over an o’er
Hush mavourneen, the police are watching
And you know that I must go a stor
Hush now mavourneen, the police are watching
And you know that I must go a stor
Any day I’ll be over the mountain
There’ll be time enough left for to cry
So good night and God guard you forever
And write to me once you get by
So good night and God guard you forever
And write to me once you get by
Love,
Toe
